Ian trained as a secondary geography teacher in the 1980s and spent 32 years in education, serving in a range of roles including head of department, deputy headteacher and headteacher across southern and eastern England. He was also involved in teacher training as a lecturer and mentor in London, and authored textbooks to support a new A-level course.

In 2014, he stepped down from headship to complete a Master's degree in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of East London, developing consultancy support for schools and senior leaders focused on teacher resilience and wellbeing. He has since continued to work as a trainer and mentor on teacher training programmes in Suffolk and Norfolk, as well as lecturing on undergraduate courses at the University of Suffolk.

Ian is a keen gardener and golfer, sings in a community choir, and writes about politics and the environment. He is also an enthusiastic and active grandparent.
