Don’t change lanes – the maths of holiday traffic jams
Traffic jams often happen without a real incident, and the maths tells us that changing lanes will make things worse
Randa Herzallah is an Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Warwick. Her research develops mathematical methods for predicting and controlling complex systems under uncertainty, with applications spanning engineering networks, intelligent systems and quantum technologies.
Dr Herzallah's research perspective is very multi-disciplinary, including expertise across computing and applied mathematics, quantum systems, Mechatronics engineering, multiagent systems, formation control, synchronisation of complex dynamical systems, bioinformatics data analysis, time series, signal processing, Robotics, adaptive critics and dynamic programming, statistical pattern processing, and machine learning.
She also works with industrially related problems to analyse data that is generated in real context by various IoT devices and solve real world problems that changes dynamically over time. This includes projects in the areas of biomedical signal processing, anomaly detection (ex. leak detection, and ground penetrating radar pipeline detection), operational research and smart scheduling systems, decentralised control of power systems, and quantum system control.
