Prof Richard Toye

Richard is Professor of Modern History, University of Exeter. He is an historian of Britain in its global and imperial context in the period from the late Nineteenth Century to the present day. He is particularly interested in the rhetorical dimensions of politics and economics. He is the author of, amongst other works, Rhetoric: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2013) and Age of Hope: Labour, 1945, and the Birth of Modern Britain (Bloomsbury, 2023). Prior to moving to Exeter in 2007 he taught at the universities of Manchester and Cambridge.
