The new ‘free’ childcare: a childminder’s view
The ‘free’ childcare hours mean nothing if the sector is underfunded and cannot attract workers with competitive wage packets.
Ruth was a much sought-after babysitter in her teens. Following 20 years in retail and retail management, she qualified as a childminder 3 years ago. She looks after children from the age of 6 months, and up to 11 years in a wraparound capacity, and has been childminding for 2 years.
In her spare time she runs, and is studying for an Open University degree. She has three children of her own.
