Dear editor,
I support Stephen McNair’s article of 12 September. I do not believe that we need to ditch the monarchy. Other problems awaiting the next progressive government will be far more pressing.
John Burn-Murdoch’s recent Twitter thread compares standards of living across the income distribution in developed countries. The US and UK come out of this very badly. Poor Brits are significantly poorer than their equivalents in many European countries, including Slovenia.
At the other end of the distribution sits Norway, with its bottom 5% having a better standard of living than the bottom 5% anywhere else in the world.
I would rather live in a constitutional monarchy like Norway than an unequal republic like the US. Stephen’s call for a reformed monarchy is spot on. King Charles should start now by paying inheritance tax.
