Dear Editor,
In a society where the government claims we are unable to pay nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, paramedics, carers, teachers and railway staff, we are creating freeports as mechanisms for avoiding duties, tariffs and taxes that contribute to our vital public services.
Britain is a nation responsible for the facilitation of global financial corruption, tax-avoidance and money-laundering through the unaccountable City of London and its seventeen crown tax havens. And now, with our “freeports”, we embrace the avoidance of tax, duties and tariffs as national policy thanks to the government’s political ideology.
We already have insufficient tax revenues to pay our public workers a decent salary, and with the advent of freeports it’s going to get worse.
