A Norfolk council leader has written an open letter to his local MP, imploring him to help end the “unacceptable treatment” his Liberal Democrat colleagues have suffered at the hands of Conservatives, and work together to clean up politics.
Tim Adams is the leader of North Norfolk District Council, and for some time there has been bad blood between him and the North Norfolk MP, Duncan Baker. Adams recently declared that he would break off communication with Baker for 12 weeks, following their latest acrimonious disagreement.
Now, Adams says he wants “to re-open a dialogue with Mr Baker so that, together, we can tackle and see an end to the unacceptable abuse of councillors in North Norfolk.”
He goes on: “I’ve written to him today, inviting him to attend a face-to-face, open meeting with me so that we can work out a plan to keep North Norfolk’s councillors safe.“
Police investigate claimed ‘death threat’
The move comes as it is claimed police have been called in to investigate a possible death threat against the prospective Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate by Richard Shepherd, a former policeman and a member of Sheringham Town Council. At the time, Shepherd was a member of the Conservative Party, though it is reported that he has left the party since the incident.
Responding to a picture on Facebook of Baconsthorpe Castle in North Norfolk, Shepherd wrote: “Photo of the Bloody Tower where Libs (one in particular!) may be beheaded. Including Stephanie Aquarone!!”
The offensive post has since been removed. Liberal Democrats however insist that they have suffered further insults and cases of misogyny.
EAB and in particular Mr Pecksniff has written disparagingly in the past about the state of politics in the North Norfolk constituency. Duncan Baker has been approached to find out how he might respond to the letter, but at the time of publication we have not received his reply.
