Dear Editor,
As the DUP hold the UK government and the EU to ransom over the “protocol”, it is easy to forget the people of Northern Ireland voted to remain within the EU and alongside their neighbours in Eire. It was this unity and the EU freedoms all the people on the island of Ireland shared, that made the Good Friday Agreement possible.
In many European nations – for example the Netherlands and Spain – it is interesting to note it is not possible to enact any constitutional change such as leaving the EU, without a unanimous vote from every autonomous region and principality of those respective nations.
Constitutional change also requires a two thirds majority in many nations.
In the undemocratic UK, the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland – and Scotland too – counted for nothing. There is no unity of nations within the United Kingdom. I’m sad to say England and the English government rule, and set the rules.
The democratic wishes of the people of Northern Ireland were disregarded. The Brexit-supporting DUP opposes the protocol. Once again, Brexit has caused havoc and no-one is happy.
