Martin has been a journalist since 1980, initially working on leading regional newspapers in the UK, such as the Northern Echo, and the Birmingham Evening Mail where he was its Chief Reporter and investigations reporter. In 2001 he moved to Brussels, where he remains. There, he was worked for the European Voice, now part of Politico, and a range of titles covering the EU, Belgium and others topics.

Martin has also worked as a freelance for The Bulletin, the Telegraph, Defence News , the BBC, the Parliament magazine and the International Policy Digest. He has also worked for online portals such as EU Reporter, EUToday, EU Political Report and Brussels Morning, along with non political titles such as Travel Tomorrow, Everything Brussels and the Brussels Times. In addition, Martin has written for a number of regional Bylines in the Bylines Network.
